Patient Participation Group

Report 2012/13

MOUNT CHAMBERS SURGERY

In our first Patient Participation Group Report in March 2012 we reported that we had recruited 43 members. This has now grown to 52 and the members are active in our key areas for improvement in 2012/13, namely our Appointment System and New Premises

The numbers below give a breakdown by age, sex and ethnicity for the group and our population.  Within the group we have managed to recruit a wide variety of patients from very healthy through to those with chronic diseases, mobility issues and disabilities. In terms of lifestyle the group includes a teenager, a young parent, a commuter, and some retired patients. We believe this group is broadly representative of our total patient population.

Our Patient Survey

Our Patient survey, completed and published in March 2012 helped our Patient Participation Group determine our priorities for 2012/13. These were:

1.       To redesign our Appointment System

2.       To bid for and a start a Campaign for New Premises

3.       Consult our Patient Participation Group on the survey questions for March 2013

PROGRESS in 2012/13

The Appointment System

Our Appointment System was completely redesigned in July 2012. Our rationale for doing so was to create greater accessibility for patients and address many of the comments that had been received in our survey. Those comments are available to view on our web site.

We have now stopped the 48 hour booking of appointments. We now have “advanced booking” appointments that can be booked with the doctor of choice up to six weeks ahead. These appointments are also available on the internet. We also have “on the day” appointments for booking with any doctor for conditions that cannot wait for an advanced appointment. A patient information leaflet, explaining these changes, is attached as Appendix 1.

Our intention is to monitor these changes closely and to repeat the patient survey in conjunction with our Patient Participation Group.

Campaign for New Premises

Once again, in response to patients’ comments, we bid for New Premises in 2012. A formal bid was presented to the PCT in October 2012.

Unfortunately, the PCT, once again rejected this bid, the 5th time it has done so. We therefore started a Campaign to ensure the PCT were aware of the views of our patients. We also asked our patients their views on closing our list to new patients until a new development becomes available.

After 3 weeks of this campaign over 1100 of our patients have completed our survey.

99.4% are in favour of our Campaign for new premises

95.6% are in favour of closing our list to new patients

We therefore have made a formal application to the PCT to close our list.

Patients were also asked to free text their comments and over 300 patients have chosen to do so.

Choosing the Questions for our Patient Survey

For this second year of our Patient Participation Group we decided to use the same national company with pre-set questions for a patient survey. This would allow fair comparisons with previous year’s results. Our Patient Participation group was asked to comment on these survey questions and they were approved. We will share the results with our Patient Participation group and use the results to determine topics for improvement for 2013/14.

The Future

We would welcome additional members to the PRG. If you would like to become involved in this process please ask at reception, telephone 01376 556982, email secretarymchambers@nhs.net
